Hidden calas in Mallorca: the coves worth the detour
Past the resort beaches there's another Mallorca — pine-fringed coves with forty people instead of four thousand. These are the ones worth the walk (or the boat).
What makes a cala worth the detour
Mallorca has more than 260 beaches, and the famous ones — Es Trenc, Cala Agulla, Playa de Muro — are famous for a reason. But the days people talk about for years happen at the small ones: a horseshoe of turquoise between pine-covered headlands, forty people instead of four thousand, and the smell of salt and rosemary instead of sunscreen queues. The price of entry is usually a 15–40 minute walk, or a boat.
These are the coves we actually send people to, roughly ordered by effort-to-reward.
The ones you can walk to
Caló d'en Monjo — southwest
Twenty minutes on foot from Cala Fornells and somehow still half-empty in August. Deep, sheltered, glassy water that's perfect for a first snorkel. No bar, no sunbeds — bring everything.
Cala Estreta — east coast
A narrow slot of sand past Cala Agulla's crowds, part of a protected stretch where three coves sit in a row. Walk ten more minutes and you'll likely have the third one to yourself.
Cala Varques — east coast
The east's worst-kept secret, and still worth it midweek. Cliff jumpers at one end, caves you can swim into at the other. The walk in from the road is 20 minutes through farmland.
Platja des Coll Baix — north
A wild, cliff-backed amphitheatre of pale pebbles near Alcúdia with water an unreal shade of milky blue. The descent is steep and the sea gets deep fast — confident swimmers only, and it's a highlight of several boat and jet ski tours if you'd rather arrive the easy way.
Es Caló des Màrmols — south
The pilgrimage: an hour-plus walk along bare clifftop from Cap de ses Salines, and the reward is a marble-white cove that feels genuinely undiscovered. Start early, carry two litres of water per person, and tell someone where you've gone.
The ones that are better by boat
Cala Tuent — west coast
Sa Calobra's quiet neighbour under the highest peaks of the Tramuntana. Driveable, but arriving by sea — mountains stacked behind a lonely curve of pebbles — is one of the great Mallorca moments. Featured on our west coast charters.
Cala Murta & the Formentor coves — north
Pine-fringed slivers along the Formentor peninsula that swallow boat anchors and day-trippers gracefully. A jet ski tour from Alcúdia or Pollença strings three or four of them together in a morning.
Cala Magraner — east coast
No road, no facilities, high cliffs, quiet even in peak season. Kayak or boat access, and one of the coves where a skippered morning genuinely beats any beach club on the island.

Questions we get asked
Which hidden calas are best for families with kids?
Caló d'en Monjo and Cala Tuent are the friendliest — sheltered water and manageable access. Coll Baix and Es Caló des Màrmols are not suitable for young children because of the steep approach and deep water.
Do hidden calas in Mallorca have sunbeds or bars?
Almost none of the coves in this guide have any facilities at all — that's exactly why they stay beautiful. Bring water, shade, and everything you need for the day, and carry it all back out.
What's the best way to reach coves with no road access?
By sea. Skippered boat mornings and guided jet ski tours reach Cala Magraner, Coll Baix and the Formentor coves without the hike, and you can add them to the free planner to get real prices.
When is the best time of day to visit?
Before 11am. You'll get the calmest sea, the emptiest sand and the best light. By mid-afternoon in summer even the walk-in coves collect a crowd.
