Muay Thai, MMA & jiu jitsu in Phuket

One road in Chalong with more than twenty gyms on it. You do not need to be a fighter to walk in.

Soi Ta-iad

Phuket has a street that is just gyms

Muay Thai, MMA, Brazilian jiu jitsu, boxing, crossfit and strength work, one after another down a single road in Chalong, with the health-food cafés, recovery rooms and supplement shops that grew up around them. Tiger Muay Thai is the name everyone knows, but the street itself is the thing — and drop-ins are completely normal.

One to two hours

Muay Thai

The reason most people come. Turn up, pay for the session, train. The bigger gyms run beginner classes several times a day and are used to people who have never done it — you are not going to be thrown in with fighters unless you ask to be.

  • Beginners genuinely welcome
  • Several classes a day
  • Gloves usually available
One to two hours

MMA & jiu jitsu

Several of the gyms run full MMA programmes and dedicated BJJ mats, with gi and no-gi classes through the day. Open mats are common and visitors are expected.

  • Gi and no-gi
  • Open mats
  • Coaches from everywhere
One to two hours

Boxing, crossfit & strength

Western boxing, conditioning classes, crossfit boxes and proper weight rooms — several of them better equipped than most gyms at home. Useful if you want to keep training rather than start a new sport.

  • Full weight rooms
  • Conditioning classes
  • Day passes normal
Multi-day passes

A week or a month

The reason people come to Phuket for a month rather than a week. Weekly and monthly passes are much better value than paying per session, and most of the gyms have accommodation attached or nearby.

  • Weekly & monthly rates
  • Accommodation on site
  • Every level catered for
An afternoon

The rest of the street

Smoothie bars, protein cafés, physio and recovery rooms, a couple of good coffee places. Even if you never put gloves on it is an interesting hour, and it is the least touristy part of the island that tourists actually go to.

  • Health cafés
  • Recovery & physio
  • Genuinely local

Soi Ta-iad is not on the Smart Bus route and a song thaew means changing in Phuket Town, so it is a Grab or a scooter. The Chalong roundabout right next to it is a known police checkpoint — you need a motorcycle licence to ride past it legally, and your insurance depends on it. Want to watch a fight rather than train? That is on the nightlife page.

Training questions, answered

For anyone thinking about a session or a month.

Can a complete beginner train Muay Thai in Phuket?

Yes, and most people on Fitness Street are. The bigger gyms run beginner classes several times a day and are used to people who have never done it — you are not going to be put in with fighters. Turn up, pay for the session, train.

Where is Fitness Street?

Soi Ta-iad in Chalong, in the south of the island. Twenty-odd gyms along one road, including Tiger Muay Thai, plus the cafés, physio rooms and recovery places that have grown up around them.

Is it only Muay Thai?

No. Several gyms run full MMA programmes and dedicated BJJ mats with gi and no-gi classes through the day, and there is western boxing, conditioning, crossfit and proper weight rooms — several better equipped than most gyms at home.

Do I need my own gloves?

Not to start. Gloves are usually available to borrow or hire at the gyms, though anyone staying more than a few days tends to buy their own locally.

Is it worth staying a week or a month?

That is the reason people come to Phuket rather than train at home. Weekly and monthly passes are much better value than paying per session, and most of the gyms have accommodation attached or nearby.
