Afternoon into the evening
Yona Beach Club is our top pick and the one we deal with directly — a floating club on a converted vessel, reached by boat off Patong. There is nothing else like it on the island. Catch, Café del Mar, RAVA, Barra Cuda and Kudo are all on the page too, on the sand at Bang Tao, Kamala, Laguna and Patong.

Morning is the good half
Every beach in Thailand is public by law — nobody can charge you for the sand. Kata and Karon for the long walks, Nai Harn and Ya Nui for the swimming, Laem Singh and Banana for the pretty ones you have to work for. We tell you which have lifeguards and which don't.

After dark

Early, before the heat
One road in Chalong — Soi Ta-iad — with more than twenty gyms on it, Tiger Muay Thai among them, plus the health cafés and recovery rooms that grew up around them. Drop-ins are normal and beginners are genuinely catered for. Muay Thai, MMA, Brazilian jiu jitsu, boxing and crossfit, all on one road.

Breakfast, and again at six
Phuket cooks Peranakan and Hokkien, not generic Thai, and the Old Town is the best free half day on the island. Hokkien noodles at a place open since 1946, oyster omelette, moo hong. A full street-food dinner with a drink costs a fraction of what it would at home.

Check the day before you go
There is a market almost every night, but each one runs on its own days and this is what most people get wrong. Lard Yai is Sundays only. Chillva is closed Sundays. Naka is weekends. Boat Avenue is Fridays. Get it right and it is the best value eating on the island.

A whole day, start early
Phi Phi, Phang Nga, Koh Yao, Krabi and Railay all go from Phuket, and the scheduled ferry costs a fraction of a booked tour. On the island itself: the Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, the rainforest and the viewpoints. You do not need a hire car — we tell you how it actually joins up.

The things people email us about most.
We plan private days out in Phuket — a boat to Phi Phi or Phang Nga, a day at Yona, restaurant tables and club tables — booked in your name and arranged in the right order for the day you have. Everything else in your itinerary is free information we earn nothing on.
The whole island. Boats go from Rassada Pier and Chalong; the beaches run down the west coast from Mai Khao to Nai Harn; the Old Town, the markets and most of the good cheap food are on the other side of the island.
High season runs November to April, and Christmas and New Year are the tightest fortnight of the year — for those dates, as far ahead as you can. The rest of high season a week or two is usually plenty. May to October is quieter and you can often sort a day at short notice, but a boat trip can be called off for weather, so keep a spare day.
No. The itinerary is free and yours to keep whether you book anything through us or not — most of what's on these pages is a beach, a temple or a bowl of noodles we earn nothing on. We only make anything if you take up the boat or the beach club, and you'd see those terms in writing before anything is held.
No. Bangla Road in Patong is where the clubs are and most of it is walk-in — you can have a full night there without booking a thing, and we'll tell you honestly how the street works before you go. If you'd rather have a table waiting, say so and we'll arrange it, with the terms in writing first.
