Savaya is a beach club by day and a proper club by night, on the Bukit clifftop. Desa Kitsuné is a garden in Canggu, three nights a week, and not a beach club at all. We hold a complimentary guestlist for both — ask and your name goes down. Then Canggu and Seminyak, which are the two areas you can do on foot.

Canggu, Uluwatu & Ubud
Bali is one of the best places in the world to train on holiday. Obsidian in Pererenan for serious lifting, Body Factory and Nirvana Life for classes and recovery, SOMA for fighting, and Ubud for the yoga. The thing to ask first is whether it is air-conditioned.

The white sand is almost all on the Bukit peninsula — Padang Padang, Balangan, Melasti, Bingin. Canggu and Seminyak are dark volcanic sand with the surf and the sunsets. Several of the Bukit beaches are a different beach entirely at low tide, so we build the days around the tide rather than against it.

Working religious places rather than monuments, with ceremonies going on around you. Uluwatu on the cliff edge and the Kecak fire dance at sunset is the one we would tell anyone to see. Sarongs are handed out at every gate, so there is nothing to buy first.

Ubud & inland
Three of the good waterfalls sit twenty minutes apart near Ubud, so you can do two or three in a morning. Sekumpul is the best one and it is a full day north on its own. Jatiluwih is the rice terrace that still looks like farmland; Tegalalang is the famous one, and you go early or you go with everybody.

No, and most people do not. A driver for the day is the normal way to cover the island and it costs less than you would expect. Grab and Gojek work in most places but are barred from picking up in parts of the island, including some of the Bukit. Scooters are everywhere, but you need the right licence and most travel insurance will not cover you without it.
Further than the map suggests. Canggu to Uluwatu is about an hour when the roads are kind and a good deal longer between three and six. Ubud to the Bukit and back in one day is the mistake almost everybody makes, so we build the days around the drives rather than pretending they are not there.
