"Beach club" in Bali covers three completely different things, and which one you have booked is usually discovered on arrival. Some are genuinely on the sand. Some are on a cliff a hundred metres above the sea with no way down. Some are a pool set back from the road with no water in sight. They are all worth going to — they are just not the same day out. The one in the photograph above is Savaya, on the Uluwatu clifftop — a beach club by day and a proper club by night, except the beach is a cliff a hundred metres up. Its full write-up is on the nightlife page because of the second half of that sentence. Everything below is here so you know which is which before you pay for a daybed.
The biggest name in Canggu and genuinely on the beach — pools, bars, DJs, dancers and fireworks, run at industrial scale. Free to walk in; what you pay for is somewhere to sit.
The sand is black volcanic, not white, and you should not swim in the sea here — the rip is serious. The pools are the swimming. Book a bed ahead or arrive before one, or you will have nowhere to sit.
Next door to Finns and enormous — it bills itself as the biggest beach club in the world, and books big touring names to fill it.
Scale is the point and also the problem: on a quiet day it feels empty rather than exclusive, and a recent redesign put a bar between much of the seating and the sunset. Bring your passport, there is a check on the door.
Built out of reclaimed fishing boats on Echo Beach, with tree-house seating and a pool. The least corporate of the Canggu clubs and the one with the best music programming.
The street it sits on bans Grab and Gojek in both directions — pickup and drop-off — and the local drivers watch the road. Order to the top of the lane and walk the last few minutes, or take a driver for the evening.
Canggu’s original sunset spot — a grass lawn and daybeds at the top of the sand, a small ocean-facing pool, and the Batu Bolong longboard break straight in front. Rebuilt in 2024, and still the least try-hard of the Canggu sunset places.
No entry fee — walk in and sit in the bar. Daybeds and pool sofas are booked with a minimum spend that comes off your food and drink. It fills from about four and the sunset seats go first, so get there an hour before. It closes at ten most nights, so treat it as sunset rather than a night out.
On Petitenget beach, and more of a creative village than a club — architecture, galleries, a shop and a serious zero-waste programme alongside the pool and the famous sunset steps.
Free to walk in earlier in the day, with a cover charge from late afternoon that comes back to you against food and drink. The sunset steps are shoulder to shoulder from about half four.
The original Bali beach club, on Seminyak beach since 2000, and one of the very few doing breakfast. Grown-up and restaurant-led — sunset cocktails rather than a party.
It trades on having been first and it is not cheap. If you want a calm sunset and a proper dinner it still works. If you want a party it is not the one.
The one on this page with actual white sand and water you can genuinely swim in — a sheltered reef lagoon at the bottom of the Ungasan cliffs. Free kayaks and snorkelling, live music late afternoon, and a bonfire on the sand at dusk.
You come down the cliff on an inclinator and then there are another fifty or seventy steps, which nobody mentions and which is hard work coming back up in the heat. You also walk in through a five-star hotel. Seating is first come — get there for opening.
Not a beach club at all — a bar hanging off the cliff at Uluwatu, straight above the reef, and one of the best sunsets on the island. Free to walk in, no minimum spend, and you can make one drink last while you watch the surfers underneath you.
Sunday is the session everyone means and it is rammed from mid-afternoon — brilliant if that is what you came for, unbearable if it is not. Any other evening you get the same view and a fraction of the crowd. Steps down, and the same steps back up.
Clifftop rather than beach, with an ocean deck and a pool, and the most music-literate programming in Uluwatu — house and electronic residencies rather than commercial pop.
Twenty-one and over, so it rules out families entirely. And getting out of Uluwatu after sunset takes far longer than anyone expects — sort the ride home before you settle in.
The Ibiza name, transplanted. A big pool with grass daybeds, polished, calmer than the Berawa giants, and one of the few with room for children.
Worth knowing before you book: it is not on the beach. It is set back from the water, and what you are paying for is the pool and the room rather than a sea view.
A saltwater lagoon pool in the middle of Seminyak with one, three and five metre diving platforms. Young, loud, and good fun if that is the day you are after.
No beach, no sand and no sea view at all. The diving tower is the whole reason to go — if you wanted a sunset over the water this is the wrong place entirely.
One thing that applies to the whole page. Beach clubs open and close here fast: Bali is enforcing building permits and how close to the sea you can build, a whole strip of famous places at Bingin was demolished in 2025 and has not come back, and several venues elsewhere are on formal warnings. If one of these is the reason for the trip, check it is open the week you travel rather than the month you plan.

Finns, Atlas, La Brisa, Potato Head, Ku De Ta and Sundays are genuinely on sand. Single Fin and Ulu Cliffhouse are on a cliff with no beach. Café del Mar and Mrs Sippy are pools set back from the water. They are all good; they are just not the same day.
Single Fin, and it is not close — a bar on the cliff edge at Uluwatu, straight above the reef. It is free to walk into and there is no minimum spend. Avoid Sunday unless the crowd is the point.
Sundays, at Ungasan — a sheltered reef lagoon with white sand and calm water. At the Canggu and Berawa clubs the rip is serious and the pools are the swimming.
Sundays at Ungasan caps its numbers, so book that one. Potato Head and Ku De Ta take reservations and are worth it at sunset. The Canggu and Berawa clubs are walk-in for the bar; it is only the daybeds and pool seating that need holding.
Not in Canggu, Berawa or Echo Beach — that is black volcanic sand, and Seminyak is grey-brown. The white sand is on the Bukit: Sundays is the one on this page.
At the big Canggu clubs and at Potato Head, yes, or arrive early. Minimum spends and entry charges change often here, so check the exact date rather than trusting a figure you read somewhere — including ours, which is why we do not publish any.
